Where it came from
The Barefoot Princess, authored by the influential shōjo manga pioneer Watanabe Masako, emerged during a transformative period for Japanese girls' comics in the mid-20th century. Watanabe was a central figure in the 'Year 24 Group' era, known for shifting the medium away from simple episodic tales toward more emotionally resonant, narrative-driven storytelling that explored complex themes of identity and longing.
The design and visual language of this work reflect Watanabe’s signature gothic-romantic style, characterized by delicate, expressive character portraits and ornate settings. As one of the foundational creators of the genre, her work was instrumental in establishing the visual tropes of shōjo manga, receiving critical recognition for its role in evolving the emotional depth and artistic sophistication of the medium for young female readers.
