The Biblical World

The Biblical World originated in 1893 as a scholarly journal published by the University of Chicago Press, succeeding the earlier publication titled The Old and New Testament Student. Spearheaded by William Rainey Harper, the first president of the University of Chicago and a noted Hebraist, the journal was designed to bridge the gap between rigorous academic biblical criticism and the practical interests of clergy and laypeople. Harper intended for the publication to reflect the university's commitment to the historical-critical method, positioning it as a significant platform for the intellectualization of religious studies in America during the late nineteenth century.

The editorial vision focused on making complex historical and archaeological findings accessible through scholarly yet readable essays. While Harper served as the driving force behind the journal’s inception and initial intellectual character, it eventually evolved under later editors to include a broader range of contributors from across the theological spectrum. The journal maintained a respected presence in academia for decades, serving as an important historical record of the shifting perspectives on biblical interpretation and pedagogy during the formative years of the University of Chicago’s divinity school.
