Where it came from
The Big O manga, illustrated by Hitoshi Ariga, was serialized in Kodansha's Magazine Z starting in 1999. It serves as a companion piece to the Sunrise anime series of the same name, which debuted the same year. The story is set in the dome city of Paradigm, a post-apocalyptic metropolis where the inhabitants have lost their memories, and follows Roger Smith, a negotiator who pilots a giant robot known as a Megadeus.
Hitoshi Ariga's adaptation is noted for its distinct visual style, which captures the series' fusion of film noir aesthetics and classic mecha tropes. While the anime was heavily influenced by American superhero comics and Batman: The Animated Series, Ariga’s manga interpretation distills these motifs into a gritty, dense paneling style that emphasizes the scale of the machinery and the mystery of the city. The work is widely regarded by fans for how it translates the atmospheric, jazz-infused tone of the screen version into a compelling print experience.
