The Book of the Kindred Sayings

The Book of the Kindred Sayings, or Samyutta Nikaya, serves as a cornerstone of Pali Canon literature. First translated into English under the auspices of the Pali Text Society by C.A.F. Rhys Davids and F.L. Woodward, this multi-volume set was commissioned to preserve and disseminate the teachings of the Buddha for Western scholarship. The translation process, spanning several decades in the early 20th century, sought to balance rigorous academic accuracy with the poetic cadence found in the original Pali texts.

The design of this specific edition, often published by Motilal Banarsidass, reflects the traditional aesthetic of South Asian scholarly printing. The text relies on literal, exhaustive translation methods to ensure that the nuanced philosophical arguments and foundational discourses—which cover a vast spectrum of meditative and ethical subjects—remain intact for modern readers. It remains a primary resource for practitioners and academics interested in the historical development of early Buddhist thought.
