The Century Dictionary was conceived in the late 19th century as an ambitious effort to surpass the depth and scholarly rigor of existing American dictionaries. William Dwight Whitney, a prominent philologist and Sanskrit scholar, served as the editor-in-chief, overseeing a massive team of contributors who aimed to provide not just definitions, but a comprehensive cyclopedic guide to the English language, including scientific, technical, and historical terminology. It was published between 1889 and 1891 by The Century Company, initially appearing in twenty-four parts before being bound into volumes.

The design and production were driven by a desire for both aesthetic elegance and extreme precision, utilizing thousands of high-quality wood engravings to illustrate technical and natural history terms. The work was widely celebrated by contemporary critics and academics for its unprecedented scope and its adherence to modern linguistic standards, solidifying its place as a landmark of Gilded Age reference publishing.
