The ceremonies of the mass, arranged conformably to the rubrics of the Book of common prayer, by W. McGarvey, C.P.A. Burnett

Published in 1905, this volume represents a significant liturgical effort within the American Episcopal Church during the early twentieth century. Authored by William McGarvey and Charles P.A. Burnett, the work was designed to provide a structured guide for the celebration of the Eucharist, aligning specific ritual practices with the formal rubrics established in the Book of Common Prayer. It emerged from the Anglo-Catholic wing of the church, reflecting a period of intense intellectual and devotional interest in harmonizing traditional ceremonial practices with the established Anglican liturgy.

The design and production of the work reflect the rigorous attention to detail characteristic of liturgical manuals of the period, emphasizing clarity for the clergy navigating the complexities of high-church ritual. By codifying movements and gestures, McGarvey and Burnett intended to achieve uniformity in worship across parishes that adopted these specific ceremonial traditions. The book was received as a comprehensive resource for those seeking to implement a more formal, rubrically precise style of worship, serving as a lasting record of the sacramental theology prevalent in the American Episcopal context at the turn of the century.
