Where it came from
The Colors by Wakatsuki Meiko emerged from the late 20th-century josei manga scene, a period defined by an increased focus on the nuanced emotional lives and professional trajectories of adult women. The series was crafted to explore the intersection of personal identity and artistic expression, utilizing a delicate, minimalist aesthetic that distinguished it from the more ornate styles prevalent in contemporary serializations.
Wakatsuki Meiko designed the visual language of the series to reflect the internal states of her protagonists, often employing subtle paneling and character-focused compositions. Upon its release, the volume was received as a contemplative work within the literary manga landscape, praised by critics for its restraint and the deliberate pacing that allowed the character-driven narrative to unfold without the reliance on traditional genre tropes.
