The Correspondence of Thomas Gray and William Mason: To which are Added Some Letters Addressed by Gray to the Rev. James Brown ...

This volume represents a significant scholarly effort to organize the epistolary legacy of the 18th-century poet Thomas Gray, best known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. Edited by John Mitford and published in the early 19th century, the collection centers on the extensive correspondence between Gray and his friend, the poet and clergyman William Mason. These letters were initially preserved by Mason, who served as Gray’s literary executor, and they offer a vital window into the intellectual life and social circles of the period.

The publication was designed to provide a comprehensive record of Gray’s personal thoughts, editorial practices, and relationships with peers like the Reverend James Brown. Mitford’s editorial work was instrumental in shaping Gray's posthumous reputation, as it humanized the reclusive poet for a Victorian audience. The volume remains a cornerstone for scholars studying the transition from neoclassical to pre-Romantic sensibilities in English literature.
