Where it came from
Alexandre Dumas originally serialized The Count of Monte Cristo in the Parisian newspaper Le Journal des Débats between 1844 and 1846. It was conceived as an epic tale of betrayal, imprisonment, and calculated vengeance, set against the backdrop of the Bourbon Restoration and the reign of Louis-Philippe. The story drew immense public interest, cementing Dumas’s status as a master of the feuilleton novel and establishing the protagonist, Edmond Dantès, as one of the most enduring figures in Western literature.
The specific volume identified by this ISBN is a contemporary illustrated edition designed to introduce modern readers to the complete, unabridged narrative. While the original publication was serialized without consistent internal illustrations, modern reprints often incorporate stylistic engravings or period-accurate imagery to evoke the nineteenth-century atmosphere of the text. These editions are intended to preserve the pacing and complexity of Dumas’s prose while offering a tactile, library-quality experience for readers revisiting the classic revenge arc.
