Where it came from
The Dragon Dentist originated as a short film produced for the Japan Animator Expo in 2014, directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and produced by Studio Khara. The project was conceived as a high-concept fantasy exploring the symbiotic relationship between humans and a giant dragon that serves as a divine guardian. Following the success of the short, it was expanded into a two-part television special in 2017, with Otaro Maijo serving as the screenwriter to flesh out the complex world-building and metaphysical themes that define the narrative.
The literary volume represents the prose adaptation of this universe, written by Otaro Maijo. Known for his experimental and often surreal style, Maijo brings a distinct, introspective tone to the source material, focusing on the existential weight of the characters' duties. The design of the printed volumes generally mirrors the aesthetic established by the animated production, emphasizing themes of life, death, and duty, and has been received by audiences as a singular, atmospheric entry in contemporary Japanese fantasy literature.
