Where it came from
The Empress with No Virtue originated as a popular web novel by the author Jiu Xiao Qi, serialized on the Chinese literary platform Jinjiang Literature City. Emerging during the height of the modern Chinese web novel boom, the series was crafted to subvert the conventions of the historical palace intrigue genre. It focuses on a protagonist who defies the traditional, submissive tropes associated with empress narratives, favoring a comedic and refreshingly pragmatic tone that resonated deeply with digital audiences.
The narrative design centers on character-driven humor and a lighthearted approach to imperial romance, which signaled a shift away from the overly grim or tragic palace dramas common at the time. Its reception was largely characterized by high engagement within online reader communities, eventually leading to its publication in physical volumes. The work is widely regarded as a significant example of the 'sweet宠' (sweet and pampered) genre, reflecting broader trends in contemporary Chinese online literature that prioritize escapism and strong, witty female leads.
