The Faunce Family History and Genealogy: The Ancestry and Descendants of John Faunce of Purleigh, Essex, England, and Plymouth, Massachusetts

Compiled and published by James Freer Faunce, this genealogical volume serves as a comprehensive record of the Faunce lineage, tracing the family from its roots in Purleigh, Essex, to its established presence in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The work emerged from a long-standing tradition of amateur and professional genealogical research common in the mid-to-late 20th century, where families sought to codify their historical movements and kinship ties for future generations. It stands as a significant primary reference for those tracking the migration patterns of early New England settlers.

The design of the work reflects the standard academic approach to mid-century genealogical documentation, prioritizing clarity of records, lineage charts, and descriptive historical context. James Freer Faunce focused on a structured, chronological presentation that aimed to bridge the archival gap between English parish records and the expansion of the family in the American colonies. It was well-received within historical societies and genealogical libraries as a reliable, exhaustive survey of the Faunce family's specific branch, providing a dense, evidence-based narrative that has since served as a foundational text for subsequent researchers studying the Plymouth settlement.
