The Five Star Stories

The Five Star Stories began serialization in 1986 within Newtype magazine, authored by Mamoru Nagano. Born from Nagano's desire to craft an expansive, millennia-spanning space opera, the series distinguishes itself through its intricate lore and the design of the Mortar Headds, biomechanical knight-piloted war machines. It emerged during an era when mecha anime and manga were thriving, yet it remained an outlier due to its focus on high-fantasy politics, complex character lineage, and an aesthetic blend of gothic sensibilities and futuristic engineering.

Nagano, who is also a noted mechanical designer, leveraged his unique visual style to define the series, utilizing flowing, organic lines that departed sharply from the blocky, utilitarian mecha designs typical of the mid-eighties. The series is celebrated for its dense world-building and meticulous craftsmanship, though it has gained a reputation for its sporadic release schedule and frequent revisions to established designs, which reflect the author's perfectionist approach to his unfolding, decades-long narrative.
