Where it came from
The Graduation Project Is, Making Butter! serves as an original independent publication produced by the Chinese creative collective known as 2396 Studio. Released within the context of China's burgeoning independent manga and art-zine scene, the work was conceived as a creative capstone project. It reflects the studio's interest in blending observational storytelling with a distinct, minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes atmospheric pacing over traditional narrative tropes.
The design of the volume emphasizes tactile engagement, featuring a layout that highlights the process-oriented nature of its title. 2396 Studio sought to document the intersection of manual labor and creative expression through a series of sequential illustrations. Upon its release, the work was noted among enthusiasts of independent graphic novels for its unconventional thematic focus and the intentional simplicity of its linework, which contrasts sharply with the high-production values typically found in commercial serializations.
