Where it came from
The Great Princess of the Pool of Time, or Toki no Suna no Mirage, emerged from the prolific creative period of mangaka Shinohara Chie during the mid-1990s. This work reflects the author's signature blend of historical romanticism, supernatural intrigue, and high-stakes drama that defined her career. It was crafted during a time when her storytelling style, often centered on resilient heroines navigating perilous, time-displaced environments, was finding significant success with the shōjo demographic.
Shinohara designed the narrative to weave together elements of fantasy and period aesthetics, a hallmark of her approach to visual storytelling. The work was received as a quintessential example of her capacity to balance emotional tension with intricate world-building. Readers of the era lauded the atmospheric illustrations and the character-driven plot, which solidified Shinohara's reputation as a master of atmospheric shōjo suspense.
