The Handy Volume "Waverly" ...: Count Robert of Paris

The Handy Volume edition of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels was published in the late 19th century, designed to provide a portable and affordable reading experience for a growing Victorian middle-class audience. These compact volumes, often sold in sets, reflected a shift in publishing towards domestic convenience, allowing readers to enjoy Scott’s epic historical narratives in a format that could be easily held or carried during travel.

The series was characterized by its modest dimensions and simplified aesthetic, intended to strip away the cumbersome weight of earlier multi-volume library editions. While Walter Scott’s works were already established as cornerstones of historical fiction by the time these editions appeared, this specific series served to democratize access to his writing. The production focused on functional elegance, prioritizing legibility and shelf-space efficiency over the elaborate bindings associated with limited collector editions of the era.
