The History of Punch

Published in 1895, The History of Punch serves as the definitive chronicle of the British satirical magazine Punch, which became a cultural institution following its inception in 1841. Marion Harry Spielmann, an influential art critic and historian, was uniquely positioned to document the publication’s legacy, having served as the art editor for the Black and White weekly. His work provides an exhaustive account of the magazine's rise to prominence as a pillar of Victorian political and social commentary, detailing the internal operations and the evolving editorial philosophy that shaped the nation’s sense of humor.

The volume is celebrated for its deep dive into the artistic evolution of the magazine, featuring extensive illustrations and biographical insights into the legendary cartoonists and contributors who defined the Punch style. Spielmann intended the book to act as both a celebratory tribute and a scholarly record, capturing the shifting landscape of mid-to-late 19th-century illustration. Upon its release, the book was received as a serious historical achievement, lauded by contemporary critics for its meticulous research and its ability to contextualize the iconic satirical drawings within the broader currents of the Victorian era.
