The House of Cockroaches

The House of Cockroaches is a representative work by Inuki Kanako, a mangaka often celebrated as the queen of Japanese horror manga. Published in the mid-1990s, the collection reflects the distinct aesthetic of the era’s horror boom, where domestic anxiety and the grotesque were frequently synthesized to challenge the readers' sense of safety within their own homes. Kanako's work is characterized by her signature eerie character designs and unsettling narrative pacing, which prioritize psychological discomfort over simple jump scares.

The volume serves as an anthology of short stories that explore themes of infestation, metamorphosis, and the corruption of the familial structure. By centering the narrative around cockroaches—creatures often associated with filth and intrusion—Kanako taps into visceral human phobias to comment on urban decay and social alienation. Upon its release, the collection solidified Kanako's reputation for crafting high-tension horror that resonates with a dedicated cult following, maintaining her status as a singular voice in the genre's history.
