Where it came from
The Laws of Lawn Tennis, first codified by the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in 1875, emerged from a necessity to standardize the rules of a rapidly evolving game. As the sport transitioned from its origins as 'sphairistikè' toward a more recognizable form of modern tennis, this volume served as the official rulebook to ensure consistency during the early competitive matches held at Wimbledon and other burgeoning clubs.
The compilation was developed by the governing body, now known as the Lawn Tennis Association, to provide clarity on court dimensions, scoring systems, and regulations for equipment. The text reflects the transition of tennis from an informal garden pastime into a structured, formal sport. It remains a foundational document in sports history, capturing the definitive transition of the game into the version played globally today.
