The Letters of Thomas Gray, Including the Correspondence of Gray and Mason Volume 2

The Letters of Thomas Gray, Including the Correspondence of Gray and Mason was originally compiled and edited by William Mason, a poet and close companion of Gray, shortly after the poet's death in 1771. Mason intended this collection to serve as a memorial, shaping Gray's literary reputation by carefully selecting and editing correspondence to highlight the subject's scholarly intellect and refined character, often omitting passages he deemed too informal or controversial.

This particular volume is part of a modern scholarly reprinting, which preserves the historical integrity of Mason's original editorial labor while making these 18th-century primary sources accessible to contemporary researchers. Such editions are valued for their role in literary history, as they provide essential insights into the epistolary culture of the Enlightenment and the enduring influence of Gray's work on subsequent generations of English literature.
