Where it came from
Published in Japan in 2017, this volume is a radical, surrealist reimagining of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic novella. Man Gatarou, a manga artist known for his signature grotesque and transgressive visual style, approached the source material not as a faithful adaptation but as a subversive project that uses the recognizable imagery of the original to create an unsettling, comedic, and often absurd experience for the reader.
The design and artistic execution reflect Gatarou’s long-standing aesthetic, which contrasts sharply with the delicate, melancholic watercolours of the original 1943 text. While the project initially polarized audiences due to its stark departure from the sentimental nature of the source material, it remains a notable example of Japanese manga culture's penchant for deconstructing Western literary icons through a jarring, high-contrast lens.
