The Monk: A Romance by Matthew Lewis

First published in 1796, The Monk stands as a seminal work of Gothic literature, authored by a nineteen-year-old Matthew Lewis. Written during a period of intense fascination with the macabre and the supernatural, the novel was conceived following Lewis's travels in Germany and his exposure to the emerging Schauerroman or 'shudder-novel' tradition. It was designed to push the boundaries of contemporary sensibilities, weaving together themes of religious corruption, dark pacts, and psychological horror.

Upon its release, the novel became a sensational success, though it was simultaneously met with severe moral outrage due to its explicit depictions of violence and taboo subject matter. Despite early attempts by critics to suppress the text, Lewis’s work secured a permanent place in the canon of Romantic literature. It remains a foundational text in the history of the gothic genre, lauded by later generations for its daring structure and its profound influence on the evolution of horror fiction.
