The Musical Times and Singing-Class Circular: George Frederick Handel

The Musical Times and Singing-Class Circular emerged in the mid-19th century as a pivotal publication for the British choral music scene. Founded in 1844 by Joseph Alfred Novello, the periodical was designed to provide affordable sheet music and critical commentary to the growing number of amateur singing classes across the United Kingdom. It played a significant role in democratizing access to classical compositions and fostering a structured appreciation for both historical masters and contemporary works during the Victorian era.

The specific volume dedicated to George Frederick Handel reflects the periodical's long-standing project of documenting the lives and influences of the great composers. These biographical essays were often compiled anonymously or written by the journal's editorial staff to educate the burgeoning middle-class readership on Handel's profound impact on British oratorio. The text serves as both a historical record of the 19th-century perception of Handel and a testament to the influence of Novello's publishing house in shaping the canon of Western art music.
