The New Werner Twentieth Century Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica: A Standard Work of Reference in Art, Literature, Science, History, Geography, Commerce, Biography, Discovery and Invention; Volume 25

The New Werner Twentieth Century Edition was produced in the early 1900s as a comprehensive American reprint of the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Following the expiration of the original British copyright, the Werner Company of Akron, Ohio, utilized the plates to create an affordable, accessible reference work for the burgeoning American market at the turn of the century. This specific volume serves as part of an expansive set designed to consolidate human knowledge into a uniform series for domestic libraries and schools.

The editorial philosophy behind the Werner Edition focused on balancing the intellectual rigor of the original British contributors with supplemental American content to ensure relevance for domestic readers. While the design and illustrative plates were largely inherited from the ninth edition—a period often considered the zenith of the Britannica's academic ambition—this specific printing is noted for its utilitarian, sturdy binding and wide circulation. It represents a significant era in publishing where encyclopedic information was being democratized for the middle class.
