The Novels of Samuel Richardson: Complete and Unabridged ...

The Novels of Samuel Richardson: Complete and Unabridged, published by the Shakespeare Head Press, represents a significant early twentieth-century effort to provide a definitive, high-quality scholarly edition of the foundational epistolary novelist. Founded by A.H. Bullen, the Shakespeare Head Press was known for its commitment to the aesthetics of the book arts and historical preservation. This edition aimed to present Richardson’s dense, expansive narratives—specifically Pamela, Clarissa, and Sir Charles Grandison—with typography and binding that reflected the gravitas of his influence on the development of the English novel.

The design of these volumes was intentionally understated to emphasize the text itself, favoring traditional layouts and durable materials consistent with the Press’s mission to elevate British literature through fine printing. By the time of this publication, Richardson’s works were already canonical, yet they had often suffered from abridgment in popular press editions. This collection was received by academics and bibliophiles as a necessary effort to restore the author’s original intent, serving as a pillar for libraries and private collections dedicated to eighteenth-century prose fiction.
