The One I Love

The One I Love, known in Japan as Watashi no Suki na Hito, is a short story collection published in 1999 that highlights the collaborative storytelling strengths of the manga artist collective CLAMP. The work originated as a series of twelve interconnected short stories serialized in the magazine Kadokawa Shoten's Young Rose, exploring the complex and often fleeting nature of romantic affection through vignettes that focus on a wide variety of perspectives and relationship dynamics.

The design and narrative approach of the volume reflect the group's transition toward more mature, grounded subject matter compared to their earlier high-fantasy hits. The stories are renowned for their delicate, emotive illustrations and poignant tone, which seek to capture the bittersweet essence of love in daily life. Upon release, it was well-received by their dedicated fanbase for its departure from traditional shōjo tropes, offering a more reflective and contemplative look at human connection.
