Where it came from
The Oxford Handbook of Tantric Studies was commissioned as part of the prestigious Oxford Handbooks series, designed to provide authoritative and comprehensive surveys of complex academic disciplines. Published to address the growing scholarly interest in the diverse, pan-Asian traditions collectively labeled as Tantra, the volume was curated to move beyond popular misconceptions and offer a rigorous, multi-disciplinary examination of the ritual, liturgical, and philosophical foundations of these practices.
Edited by Richard K. Payne, a scholar deeply immersed in Buddhist and Shingon studies, the handbook brings together an international cohort of experts to synthesize contemporary research. The design and structure of the volume reflect a commitment to historical and contextual accuracy, emphasizing the fluidity of the term 'Tantric' across various religious contexts. Upon its release, it was received as a milestone contribution to religious studies, praised for its technical depth and its success in organizing an otherwise fragmented field of inquiry.
