The Red Balloon

The Red Balloon originated from the 1956 Academy Award-winning short film of the same name, written and directed by Albert Lamorisse. Set in the post-war Belleville neighborhood of Paris, the story follows a young boy who discovers a sentient balloon that follows him through the streets. Lamorisse conceived the project as a visual poem, capturing a nostalgic and melancholic vision of a vanishing Paris that was rapidly modernizing at the time.

The book adaptation serves as a photographic companion to the film, featuring stills captured during production. Lamorisse utilized these frames to preserve the film’s distinctive cinematic quality, relying on his children to play the lead roles. Upon release, the work was celebrated for its minimalism and its ability to convey profound themes of companionship and loss, securing its status as a timeless piece of children's literature that transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries.
