The Robert Lehman Collection: Vol. 4, Illuminations

The Robert Lehman Collection represents one of the most significant private art collections of the twentieth century, assembled primarily by the banker Robert Lehman. Following his death in 1969, the collection was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it remains a cornerstone of the institution's holdings. The publication of this multi-volume scholarly catalogue was initiated to document the vast scope of the collection, which spans from medieval and Renaissance masterworks to modern art.

Volume 4, focusing on illuminations, was authored by the distinguished art historian Sir John Pope-Hennessy. Pope-Hennessy, who served as the director of the Victoria and Albert Museum and later as a consultative chairman at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, brought his extensive expertise in European painting and sculpture to this series. The volume provides a meticulous technical and historical analysis of the illuminated manuscripts within the collection, reflecting the museum’s commitment to academic rigor and the preservation of art historical scholarship.
