The Spiritually Beneficial Tales of Paul, Bishop of Monembasia and of Other Authors

The Spiritually Beneficial Tales, translated and edited by John Wortley, represents a significant modern scholarly contribution to the study of Byzantine hagiography. Published as part of the Cistercian Studies series, this volume compiles a collection of anecdotes and moral instructions originally attributed to Paul, Bishop of Monembasia, alongside other anonymous authors from the same ecclesiastical tradition. The project emerged from an effort to make these complex, often fragmentary Greek texts accessible to contemporary readers interested in the ascetic life and spiritual landscape of the seventh-century Mediterranean world.

The translation reflects Wortley’s rigorous approach to preserving the instructional intent of the original manuscripts, which were designed to serve as guides for monks and laypeople seeking spiritual discipline. Rather than focusing on historical narrative, the design of the work prioritizes clarity and context, with extensive annotations that explain the cultural nuances of the monastic communities in which these stories originated. Upon its release, the volume was well-received within academic and theological circles for bridging the gap between specialized patristic research and the broader tradition of Christian spiritual literature.
