The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (KOSHIRO Takeshi)

The Super Dimension Fortress Macross manga adaptation by Takeshi Koshiro was released in the early 1980s, emerging during the peak of the original anime's immense popularity. It served as a print companion to the groundbreaking television series, which introduced iconic elements such as transforming variable fighters and idol culture into the mecha genre. This volume aimed to condense the sprawling narrative of the Macross saga into a serialized manga format, providing fans with a visual translation of Shoji Kawamori's complex mechanical designs and Haruhiko Mikimoto's character work.

Takeshi Koshiro's interpretation is noted for its adherence to the aesthetic language established by the animation studio Artland. By focusing on the dramatic shift from human-piloted craft to the humanoid Gerwalk and Battroid modes, the manga sought to capture the fluidity of aerial combat on the static page. While it remains a niche artifact compared to the expansive Macross franchise, the volume is regarded as a sincere effort to capture the spirit of the series' epic space opera themes for readers who wanted to revisit the story outside of broadcast television.
