Where it came from
The Temple of El Alamein is a standalone science fiction manga volume written and illustrated by Hoshino Yukinobu, a creator celebrated for his cerebral approach to the genre. Published during a period in the 1980s when Hoshino was deeply exploring themes of historical synthesis, cosmic philosophy, and human endurance, the work reflects his signature style of blending meticulous technical detail with haunting, speculative narratives that bridge the gap between ancient history and interstellar mystery.
The design of the work is characterized by Hoshino's clean, sweeping linework and his ability to construct vast, atmospheric environments that emphasize the smallness of humanity against the backdrop of time and space. The narrative utilizes the iconic North African setting of the World War II battle as a springboard for a metaphysical exploration, a hallmark of Hoshino's intellectual storytelling that garnered critical respect for bringing an elevated, contemplative sensibility to mainstream manga anthologies of that era.
