Where it came from
Commissioned by the United States Congress in 1864, this monumental set was intended to preserve the primary source documentation of the American Civil War for posterity. The work was overseen by the War Department, with Colonel Robert N. Scott serving as the initial lead editor. The compilation includes a vast array of orders, reports, and correspondence from both Union and Confederate forces, aiming to provide an objective, comprehensive record of the conflict's military operations.
The publication process spanned from 1880 to 1901, involving a dedicated team of military officers and civilian indexers like J.S. Moodey who managed the massive structural undertaking. The resulting 127 parts remain the foundational bedrock for Civil War historiography. While the scope was unparalleled in its time, scholars have noted that the collection reflects the biases of the nineteenth-century military establishment, yet it remains an essential reference for researchers studying the operational history of the war.
