The Westminster Review

The Westminster Review was established in 1824 in London by Jeremy Bentham and James Mill to serve as the intellectual organ of the Philosophical Radicals. It was created as a progressive, utilitarian alternative to the established Whig and Tory publications of the era, focusing on legal reform, secularism, and democratic expansion. Its design prioritized dense, argumentative prose that challenged the political orthodoxy of the nineteenth century.

Throughout its long history, the publication featured contributions from prominent thinkers like John Stuart Mill and George Eliot, who served as assistant editor. While it underwent various editorial changes and title variations over the decades, the review remains a critical primary source for understanding the development of radical political theory and the intellectual climate of Victorian England.
