Where it came from
Released by Dark Horse Comics in 2015, The Witcher: Fox Children #1 serves as a standalone expansion to the narrative world established by Andrzej Sapkowski and popularized by CD Projekt Red's video games. Written by Paul Tobin with art by Joe Querio, the story was crafted to bridge the gap between prose and interactive media, specifically adapting elements found in the novel Season of Storms. The comic explores Geralt of Rivia’s internal moral conflicts while facing supernatural threats, aiming to capture the dark, atmospheric tone of the original fiction.
The creative direction for this series focused on maintaining a distinct visual identity that pays homage to the gothic, folklore-inspired aesthetic of the Witcher universe. Joe Querio utilized a gritty, textured illustration style intended to ground the high-fantasy elements in a believable, harsh reality. Upon its debut, the series was received as a faithful expansion of the source material, praised by fans for its commitment to the established characterization of Geralt and its effective translation of the series' signature blend of horror and dry wit.
