The Works of Gilbert Parker: Pierre and his people

Pierre and His People, first published in 1892, serves as the inaugural volume in the collected works of Canadian-English novelist Gilbert Parker. Written during the late Victorian era, the collection was instrumental in establishing Parker’s reputation as a prominent chronicler of the Canadian Northwest. These tales focus on the rugged lives of the Hudson’s Bay Company trappers and the indigenous populations, blending romanticism with the stark realities of life on the frontier.

The publication was designed to capitalize on the popularity of imperial adventure literature, a genre that held significant cultural cachet in the late 19th century. Parker’s prose was noted by contemporary critics for its atmospheric rendering of the Canadian landscape, though modern scholars often view the work through the lens of colonial storytelling tropes. As part of a larger collected edition, this volume highlights the standardizing of Parker's literary output for a public eager to consume colonial narratives.
