The Works of Thomas De Quincey: Last days of Immanuel Kant and other writings

This volume is part of the collected works of Thomas De Quincey, an English essayist renowned for his introspective and often labyrinthine prose. Published in the mid-19th century, this collection serves as a significant compilation of his literary output, focusing on his biographical reflections and philosophical critiques. The inclusion of 'The Last Days of Immanuel Kant' highlights De Quincey’s preoccupation with the intersection of intellectual biography and cultural commentary, a hallmark of his contribution to the Romantic and Victorian essay tradition.

The design and editorial arrangement of these editions were typical of the Victorian era's effort to standardize and monumentalize the works of major essayists for the private library. The presentation prioritizes readability and scholarly organization, reflecting the author’s own meticulous attention to detail. Upon its release, the collection was well-received by contemporary critics, who recognized De Quincey as a unique voice, valued for his idiosyncratic style and his ability to elevate biographical subjects into profound meditations on the human condition.
