Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors

The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors was first published in the late 1960s to serve as the foundational controlled vocabulary for the Educational Resources Information Center, a national information system funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It was designed to standardize the indexing and retrieval of educational literature, ensuring that researchers and librarians could locate pertinent documents within the rapidly expanding ERIC database by utilizing a consistent, hierarchical terminology structure.

The development of the Thesaurus was a collaborative effort involving lexicographers, subject matter experts, and information scientists who sought to organize complex pedagogical concepts into a functional system. Over successive editions, the design prioritized clarity and logical cross-referencing to manage the evolving language of education, ultimately becoming an essential reference tool for academic libraries and scholarly institutions throughout the late 20th century.
