Where it came from
To Those Who Know of the Blueness of the Sky emerged from the creative collective known as Chou Heiwa Busters, a collaborative group consisting of director Tatsuyuki Nagai, screenwriter Mari Okada, and character designer Masayoshi Tanaka. The work was conceived as a thematic exploration of adolescence, longing, and the passage of time, following the creative spirit established by their previous successful collaborations like Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. It was designed to capture a bittersweet, nostalgic atmosphere, focusing on the intersection between past ambitions and present realities within a small, provincial town setting.
The publication was received as a poignant addition to the group's body of work, praised for its character-driven narrative and the distinctive, emotive art style spearheaded by Tanaka. By blending grounded, relatable human struggles with subtle fantasy elements, the creators aimed to evoke a specific sense of 'blueness'—a metaphorical representation of youth and unfulfilled potential. Critics and audiences alike noted the volume for its deliberate pacing and its success in distilling complex emotional arcs into a focused, literary format.
