Where it came from
Tokei-dai no Daiseijo wa Kon'yaku Haki ni Kanki Suru, or The Clock Tower Saint Rejoices at Her Engagement Annulment, originated as a light novel series authored by Itoka. It emerged within the prolific Japanese web-novel subgenre of villainess and engagement-annulment narratives, which gained immense popularity on platforms like Shousetsuka ni Narou during the late 2010s. The story is centered on the protagonist's strategic and often humorous reaction to the dissolution of her betrothal, playing on established tropes of the fantasy romance genre.
The series was subsequently adapted into a manga format, maintaining the lighthearted and subverted tone of the original narrative. The visual aesthetic reflects contemporary shoujo and josei sensibilities, focusing on expressive character designs that emphasize the protagonist's transition from an overlooked noble to a liberated individual. While part of a saturated market of similar titles, the series has been noted by readers for its focus on character agency and the lighthearted navigation of aristocratic political intrigue.
