Tokidoki Bosotto Roshiago de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san, commonly known as Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, began as a light novel series written by Sunsunsun and illustrated by Momoco. Initially published as a web novel on the Japanese platform Shosetsuka ni Naro in 2020, the story explores the dynamic between the Russian-Japanese student Alisa Mikhailovna Kujou and her classmate Masachika Kuze, centering on Alisa’s habit of whispering endearments in Russian that she assumes her classmate does not understand.

The light novel series was officially picked up for publication by Kadokawa Shoten’s Sneaker Bunko imprint in 2021. The design and aesthetic, heavily characterized by Momoco’s soft, expressive character art, contributed to the series' rapid popularity within the light novel community.
