Tokyo Ghoul [Jack] was originally released as a digital-only manga series on the Shonen Jump+ platform in 2013, serving as a prequel to Sui Ishida’s breakout dark fantasy hit, Tokyo Ghoul. Ishida conceived the story to flesh out the backstory of Kisho Arima, the legendary investigator of the Commission of Counter Ghoul, and his first encounter with the ghoul known as Lantern. The narrative is set years before the main series, offering a grittier, more focused look at the origins of the CCG's most formidable agent.

The physical edition, published by VIZ Media in 2017, compiles the chapters into a single volume that retains Ishida’s distinctively sharp and haunting aesthetic. The art style emphasizes high-contrast inks and a sense of psychological unease, which became a trademark of the series.
