Where it came from
Too Close is a notable work by the mangaka Shou, released within the niche landscape of contemporary shonen-ai and boys' love manga. It was created to explore the delicate, often unspoken boundaries of intimacy between two protagonists, fitting into a genre tradition that prioritizes internal monologues and slow-burn emotional tension over overt plot progression.
The visual style is characteristic of Shou’s approach, emphasizing soft linework and expressive, lingering character close-ups that aim to evoke a sense of vulnerability. Upon its release, the volume was received by readers as a sincere, if understated, contribution to the genre, praised primarily for its atmospheric character study rather than its narrative complexity.
