Where it came from
Toraneko Folklore is a fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Azuma Mayumi, who is perhaps best known for her work on Elemental Gelade. The series began serialization in the mid-2000s, emerging during a period when high-fantasy adventures involving supernatural companions and quest-driven narratives were particularly popular within the seinen and shonen demographic magazines. It centers on the interactions between humans and various mythical entities, reflecting Mayumi's signature art style characterized by expressive character designs and intricate, detailed world-building.
The series was designed to blend lighthearted folklore elements with more serious themes of coexistence and conflict. Mayumi’s objective was to weave a tapestry of traditional mythologies into a contemporary manga framework, aiming to reach readers who appreciated character-focused storytelling. While the work received a dedicated following, it is often viewed as a stylistic evolution of Mayumi’s earlier projects, showcasing her refinement in pacing and panel composition throughout its published volumes.
