Where it came from
Touge Oni is a manga series created by Kenji Tsurubuchi, which began serialization in the pages of Harta magazine. The work is deeply rooted in Japanese folklore and historical fantasy, drawing significant thematic inspiration from the mythological landscape of the Yamato period. Tsurubuchi’s narrative approach is noted for its focus on the intersection of human conflict and the supernatural, presenting a world where ancient spirits and shifting landscapes mirror the turbulent history of early Japan.
The aesthetic of Touge Oni is characterized by Tsurubuchi’s distinctive, evocative art style, which emphasizes atmospheric world-building and character-driven drama. By utilizing the medium to explore folklore through a grounded, humanistic lens, the series has been well-regarded by critics for its meticulous attention to period-accurate detail and its ability to weave complex, often melancholic, mythic arcs. It serves as a notable entry in the contemporary fantasy manga genre, favored for its steady pacing and thematic depth.
