Where it came from
The Touhou Project is a long-running series of bullet hell shoot-'em-up games created by a single individual under the pseudonym ZUN, who developed the games as a one-person project under the group name Team Shanghai Alice. Beginning in 1996 for the NEC PC-9801 platform, the series evolved from relatively simple arcade-style shooters into a complex, world-building-heavy phenomenon characterized by its demanding gameplay, distinctive original soundtracks composed by ZUN, and a recurring cast of folkloric, shrine-maiden-led characters.
The series became a touchstone of internet subculture, particularly in Japan, due to ZUN's unusually permissive copyright policy regarding derivative works. By allowing fans to create and distribute their own music, illustrations, and manga based on Touhou characters, the franchise cultivated an immense, self-sustaining ecosystem of user-generated content. MangaDex serves as a primary hub where this massive library of fan-made doujinshi—unofficial manga works that expand upon the series' lore—is archived and shared, reflecting the collaborative spirit that has defined Touhou for over two decades.
