Where it came from
Toujima Tanzaburou wa Kamen Rider ni Naritai, or 'Tanzaburou Toujima Wants to be a Kamen Rider,' serves as a meta-textual reflection on the cultural impact of Shotaro Ishinomori's most iconic creation. Published in the early 1990s, the manga explores the deep-seated influence of the Kamen Rider franchise on Japanese youth, following a protagonist who idolizes the titular hero to an obsessive degree. It acts as both a tribute to the sentai genre and a gentle examination of the line between fan culture and reality.
The work is authored by Shotaro Ishinomori himself, the visionary creator behind the original 1971 Kamen Rider series. In this volume, Ishinomori utilizes his signature expressive linework to pivot away from traditional action storytelling, focusing instead on character-driven humor and the sociological phenomenon of the superhero archetype he helped define. The narrative was received by readers as a personal, lighthearted postscript to his long-running legacy, offering fans a unique, self-referential perspective on the Rider universe.
