Trash Market

Trash Market is a foundational work by Tadao Tsuge, an influential figure in the gekiga movement that transformed manga from children’s entertainment into a vehicle for stark, adult-oriented social realism. Originally serialized in the legendary alternative manga magazine Garo during the late 1960s and early 1970s, these stories emerged from a period of intense post-war disillusionment in Japan. The collection captures the grit and cynicism of the fringes of society, focusing on laborers, drifters, and those left behind by the country's rapid economic ascent.

The aesthetic of Trash Market is defined by Tsuge’s raw, unflinching illustrative style, which eschews the polished lines of mainstream manga in favor of a visceral, documentary-like approach. By highlighting the mundane struggles and moral ambiguities of his characters, Tsuge aimed to provide an honest, unvarnished portrait of human existence. The collection has since been recognized as a pivotal contribution to the medium, earning acclaim for its psychological depth and its significant role in establishing the expressive possibilities of autobiographical and socially conscious manga.
