Where it came from
Trésors de la bande dessinée, often referred to as the BDM, emerged in the late 1970s as a pioneering effort to catalog the burgeoning French-Belgian comic book market. Published as a comprehensive reference guide, it was conceived to provide collectors with systematic pricing and bibliographic data for Franco-Belgian comics, or bandes dessinées, which had transitioned from ephemeral reading material to serious objects of investment and historical study.
The guide was designed to offer a structured overview of the medium's output, covering creators, series, and editions that had previously lacked centralized documentation. Its reception was instrumental in the maturation of the European comic book market, as it provided a standardized language for valuation and rarity. Over subsequent decades, the publication became a staple for enthusiasts, serving as the essential companion for navigating the evolution of the Ninth Art.
