Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria, known in English as Wistoria: Wand and Sword, began serialization in December 2020 within the pages of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Authored by Fujino Omori, the creator of the popular Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? series, this work serves as a departure into a high-fantasy academic setting. The narrative centers on Will Serfort, a young man who aspires to become a Magia Vander but lacks the ability to cast even the most basic spells, forcing him to rely on swordplay in a world that prioritizes magical prowess.

The character designs and visual world-building for the manga are handled by illustrator Toshi Aoi. The duo aimed to blend traditional shonen tropes—such as the underdog protagonist and rigorous school challenges—with a gritty, visceral combat style that emphasizes the physical disparity between magic and steel. Upon its release, the series was received as a grounded, atmospheric take on the magical academy genre, noted for its polished art style and a darker emotional undertone than Omori’s previous works.
